Her style has always been different from those of her colleagues and it always contains something special; a special material, a special detail or a special pattern – this description may be the right one for both, musician Lady Gaga and fashion designer Jamie Wei Huang, one of the five finalists of this years fashion talent award “Designer for Tomorrow” presented by Peek & Cloppenburg Duesseldorf and Fashion ID.
And for both it has been an exciting year so far. Jamie Wei Huang just graduated in fashion design from London’s Central Saint Martins and has been nominated for the DfT award by the jury board shortly after. She then stepped into the fashion scene by presenting her collection during the award show in Berlin. Lady Gaga, however, not only started her musical comeback with the song “Applause” – that introduces her new album – but also her fashionable one: After her longtime stylist Nicola Formichetti left to concentrate on his position as Artistic Director of the brand Diesel, his assistant Brandon Maxwell has taken the reins of Lady Gaga’s closet.
And this is where their paths cross. Lady Gaga has always been highly supportive of up-and-coming fashion talent. Now, she seems to have a new favorite: DfT’s Jamie Wei Huang. The artistic approach in her collection for Spring/Summer 2014 was probably what Gaga and her stylist have been searching for to promote the new album. And so she wore some looks of Jamie’s collection for two days in a row in New York City. “I was definitely thrilled by the news and think that Lady Gaga was more than perfect for who should be the person to express my concept of a confident contemporary woman”, Jamie explains.
The musician started wearing items of the collection on a Tuesday evening with the wide leg, pleated wool pants combined to a black cropped top and an extravagantly shaped belt. The next day, the pants have been her choice again – but this time combined with the light and sheer top that originally went with it. Embellished with hexagon shaped ceramic plates, it takes on the idea of Op Art in a very modern way. The day after, Lady Gaga was spotted again wearing an all-white look from Jamie Wei Huang’s Summer collection: The cut out Rayon shirt that went with wide leg, PVC panel pants.
The collection being worn by a modern fashion icon such as Lady Gaga brings a young designer a whole lot of attention. And appropriately to that has been Jamie’s reaction to the news: “Lady Gaga’s stylist contacted me and sent me a link to the pictures. I was excited and couldn’t believe that she did wear my collection two days in two different outfits.” Has she met the famous singer ever since then personally? “I haven’t met her in person but I met a few of her styling assistants.”
After being part of the “Designer for Tomorrow” award, Jamie’s name is out there.
