DfT Award: The Advisory Board | Coaching

Last week, Leandro Cano was back in Berlin to meet Silke Geib (ABOUT:FASHION), part of the DfT’s Advisory Board. They talked about his next steps in the fashion industry and Leandro left Germany with pockets full of advice and useful hints!

Since winning the fashion talent award “Designer for Tomorrow by Peek & Cloppenburg Duesseldorf”, the Spanish up-and-coming designer Leandro Cano has been provided with an individual, sustainable sponsorship program – Immediately after the award show in July, he has got an own atelier in Seville. In September, he visited patron Marc Jacobs and his team in New York to gain an insight into the preparations for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. In October, he made an inspirational trip to the textile fair Première Vision in Paris. In the beginning of January, he returned to Paris to visit the patron’s headquarters in the french capital. And on January 15 – as a highlight of the sponsorship program – he presented his first solo fashion show in the tent of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Berlin. To realize this new collection, the designer was provided with sponsors for the different textiles used in the creations. The DfT has been accompanying Leandro Cano and supported him on his way in the industry. Now, he is about to enter the next level: Pursuing his career as a fashion designer.

Sustainable support. This is what the “Designer for Tomorrow” award wants to offer its winners. Therefore, in 2012, the Advisory Board was created. To be concrete: Also after the sponsorship program, Leandro may take advantage of individual coaching and consultancy in the fields of art & design, brand building & networking, finance & strategy, law, marketing, public relations, production as well as sales.

Already during the preparation to his first solo show, Leandro worked together with Silk Relations: The Berlin-based PR- and event agency supported P&C with events like a Blogger-Brunch hosting Marc Jacobs and the five finalists, media cooperation with edgy magazines as well as addressing the Spanish fashion press. The meeting with Silk Relations dealt with the different platforms of social media and how to present yourself professionally especially as a designer. Now, the up-and-coming talent came to Berlin to prepare his probable next step as a designer: Applying! He may work for a fashion designer or for an established fashion house. Or he may work on his own – whatever he is about to do, he needs to present his work in a professional way. Leandro has the talent. And the has the material. Silke Geib of ABOUT:FASHION, who already worked with different international design teams such as Maison Martin Margiela or Viktor & Rolf,  showed him how to present it in the right way. During the day, Leandro Cano got expert coaching on job interviews, salaries as well as the successful collaboration with a headhunting agency. And of course, he got useful advices on the perfect application including an extremely good and highly professional portfolio. Leandro has been well prepared: He brought his look book, pictures of the collections as well as details of it, samples of materials, mood boards, sketches and a lot more that represents his design. Together with Silke Geib, he put it in the right form of presentation. But is he going to apply in Germany? Or in Spain? Or even in Paris? After the coaching, he definitely knows how to apply in the different countries.

What will be Leandro Cano’s next step? Stay curious and be the first to know!
