iPhone, NY city guide, sunglasses, camera and lots of emotions. That’s what Leandro, the winner of the Designer for Tomorrow award, considers as his most important five things when visiting the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York. With sparkling eyes he told me: “It’s the first time, but I know it won’t be the last. I felt very much at home and they treated me very kindly. I’m sure I’ll be returning soon. At least, I hope I will.” What was he up to in the big apple? Cano-like he came to learn, to gain inspiration, to experiment and create new pieces for his upcoming collections. It’s all secret until now!
Things to do in New York as a first time visitor: “Visit the 5th avenue and walking along SoHo.” Leandro doesn’t like fast food, but… “I think that’s one of the things you have to eat when you are in New York.” And, of course, he was joining the Marc Jacobs workshop and enjoyed working with MJ’s team.
“Do you have other Fashion Week heroes besides Marc Jacobs?”, I wanted to know. Of course, he has, he lives fashion as well as his heroes do: Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington (both from U.S. Vogue), Anna dello Russo (Japan Vogue), Carine Roitfeld, who used to be the editor-in-chief of French Vogue and now has launched an own magazine during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York and, lastly, fashion director and editor Nicola Formichetti, famous for dressing Lady Gaga and now running the Mugler fashion house as creative director. Apropos creative: Leandro also visited MoMA museum and he is really into classics like Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Matisse and the surrealism of Dalí. As I always said: You have to know history before going crazy with new ideas!
